Relocating for nursing school isn’t a decision you should make lightly. Before going out of state for nursing school, consider the financial impact and if making a move will support your goals. Make sure to research housing and lifestyle information about the city to see if it’s a good match.
If you feel compelled to care for others, you might be a great fit for the accelerated nursing program at the College of Mount Saint Vincent in NYC. Relocating for nursing school is worth it because our program helps you leverage your previous experience into a rewarding career as a nurse. If you’re a compassionate, driven, and empathetic individual, New York City is a great place to become a registered nurse (RN).
The College of Mount Saint Vincent Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program offers a path for students with a previous non-nursing bachelor’s degree to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in as few as 16 months. We offer students a hybrid curriculum, pairing online-based coursework with in-person skills and simulation labs and clinical rotations.
While our ABSN program offers online coursework, our program is not 100% online. You’ll need to appear in person for hands-on skills and simulation labs as well as clinical rotations at respected hospitals around New York City.
Because you’ll complete labs and clinicals in-person, you may need to relocate for nursing school. Here are some important questions to ask yourself before deciding whether to move:
What to Consider Before Relocating for Nursing School

Is Relocating a Good Financial Decision?
Our ABSN program fits all the material you’d learn in a traditional four-year nursing program into just 16 months. Because of the program’s accelerated nature, we generally recommend students refrain from working while enrolled, as the program requires a full-time commitment.
Here are 10 tips for preparing for nursing school.
Planning a budget and keeping track of any loans or scholarships you’ll be receiving will be fundamental to deciding if you will be able to support yourself in your new city.
The good news is the return on investment has a positive outlook. Nurses are in demand and continue to be leaders in healthcare. As populations continue to experience aging, chronic conditions, and more, the demand for nurses remains steady. In fact, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of nursing jobs nationwide is expected to grow by 6 percent between 2021 and 2031. With many career opportunities available in the future, pursuing your BSN is a sound financial investment.
Will I Have Support If I Go to Nursing School in Another State?
Relocating to a new city can be a big undertaking. It can take time to adjust to a new location when you’re away from your support network and busy with your ABSN coursework. We recommend researching New York City’s housing and transportation options to ensure they’re compatible with your personality and budget.
